TRINIDAD GUARDIAN - By Carol Quash - If confidence creates a winner, then National Chutney Soca Monarch finalist, Rick Ramoutar, can begin planning how he will spend his $2 million in prize money. In fact he already has, but was unwilling to disclose the details of his “good plan.” “Lets just say that when I win some people will get a good surprise,” he said. The announcer and DJ at Sangeet 106.1 FM, and vocalist with the Spread Pal Crew will tonight go up against 14 other contestants at Skinner Park in San Fernando. Among them 2010 winner Ravi B, Adesh Samaroo, Rikki Jai, and chutney queen Drupatee Ramgoonai.
But the 25-year-old Couva man is certainly not fazed by having to compete against these chutney big wigs. As far as he is concerned, his song, Should Ah Never, will generate the votes he needs to top the competition. “Its the most requested song, is number one on Sangeet 106.1 FM, and it is heavily requested on other frequencies,” he disclosed. His rendition of Should Ah Never at the semifinals, he said, gained the highest number of points and was voted best performance.
The song was written by Kelvin Kissoon, and a remix was done in collaboration with Ziggy Rankin.
“It is about a frustrated young man,” Ramoutar explained, quickly pointing out that youth’s frustration did not lead to unsavoury habits. “There is no rum and no horning,” he emphasised. Ramoutar will perform at number 14, which he deduced was another plus for him. “Number 14 is ‘money’ in Play Whe, so we will see on Saturday,” he chuckled.
But it is not all about money. His plan is to give of his best, not only to win, but to give the people what they want. Voting for the 2011 Chutney Soca Monarch opens at 7 pm tonight and will close at 2 am tomorrow.
