Chutney/Soca Princess makes solo debut

There is a new chutney/soca princess on the block. Her name is Indrani Ali, but on the chutney/soca scene, she is known as Princess Indrani. Originally from Mayaro, the constituency of Arts and Multiculturalism Minister Winston “Gypsy” Peters, Princess Indrani relocated to San Fernando to pursue her dream of becoming the best in her field. At 24 the cosmetologist, and front line singer for the past two years with cross over band New Image, of Debe, is on her way to doing just that. She has made her solo debut with two compositions called Chinlee and Me, and Mr Ravi from Miami. Both songs, in the groovy chutney/soca genre, were composed by Doonath Bissessar. Indar Khanhai did the musical arrangement.

In an interview, she said music was her first love and she wanted to explore it all, without limits. Learning to play the guitar and violin, are also on her horizon. “I always wanted to sing, but because I was from Mayaro, it was difficult to go to practice with bands which were all located out of the area. “Now that I am in San Fernando, the opportunities are endless. My sister, while chatting with New Image on Facebook, realised they had an opening for a singer and hooked me up.” The all occasion band, known for its cross over music, has been hitting the sports clubs and bars circuit in Debe, as well as at farewells and parties. “People respond well to me and the band, but I want to go further. For Carnival 2011, I would like to enter the chutney/soca competition “I also want to travel and share my music with the world,” Princess Indrani, who has a preference for chutney and film music, said.
